If you’re anything like me, when you think of a getaway, you’re thinking about sun, sand, and cocktails by a pool. If that’s true, Canada might not seem like your kind of destination, but Quebec City is sure to surprise and delight you, despite not being your typical style.
Here are six reasons why Quebec City, Canada, should be your next getaway.
It’s so clean. Like, even the air smells cleaner. You instantly know that you’ve left the US and arrived in Canada when you’re surrounded by clean, green, open spaces, and even once you’re in the city, it feels different, and you will too.
Quebecois cuisine is incredible. Whether you’re a seafood fan, a wine connoisseur, or someone who enjoys fine dining of the highest quality, Quebec City is sure to provide you with a taste sensation. While some of the cuisines are inspired by the city’s French roots, there is an eclectic kind of style to Quebecois cuisine that has something for everyone.
Adventures to get the adrenaline pumping. Despite taking a few minutes to nail the instructed poses, one of the Quebec City memories I will have forever is ziplining across a 276 ft waterfall. It was over quickly, but that view was totally worth every second and more, and the adrenaline rush was as big as the waterfall. Definitely, something to try, even if you’re a little afraid of heights.
Independent artists are doing their thing. Walking through Quartier Petit Champlain, you will come across any number of artists performing, busking, and entertaining the crowds. From acrobatics and tightwire artistry performing music and dance, you can easily spend hours watching independent artists sharing their craft.
The funicular. Not gonna lie; this thing had me all kinds of nervous, but the view was incredible, and it actually was nowhere near as scary as it first seemed. The funicular is something you won’t see in many other cities around the world, so when in Quebec City, it’s well worth the ride.
Shopping in Basse-Ville. You know your girl loves to shop, but I have standards… and Basse-Ville exceeded them on every level. Wander the streets, window shop, try things on… you won’t be disappointed with the quality of merchandise on offer, and the retail assistants are all super friendly and helpful too.
Quebec City is a great place to get away for a few days and enjoy a little of everything. While it may not seem a likely destination if you’re used to warmer climates, getting out of your comfort zone here will leave you grateful you did. There is a lot to do, it feels much further away because of its French influence, and the whole experience is easy, relatively inexpensive if traveling from the US (thank you exchange rate!), and loads of fun!
