Yacht Life vs. Resort Life: What I Learned Sailing Mallorca for 4 Days, 3 Nights

Oct 1
6 min read

I'm officially back from Mallorca, Spain! And remember when I told you this wasn't just a vacation? I traveled to experience a 4-day, 3-night sailing trip with Nautica Collective and answer one very specific question: Could I actually see myself bringing you here in 2027?

Well... I have thoughts. Let me break down everything I learned.

Living on a Boat vs. Taking a Boat Day

There's a massive difference between a day trip on the water and actually living on a boat. You're waking up on the water, eating on the water, jumping in whenever you feel like it, and going to sleep in one cove only to wake up somewhere completely different. It's not a boat ride; it's an experience.

By the first night, my brain was already redesigning it: What would I keep? What would I change? What would I add if I brought Shakespeare Agency travelers here? See the full reveal here →

We Traded a 5-Star Suite for a Catamaran — Here's Why

We started the trip at Zafiro Palace Andratx, a gorgeous resort with a private rooftop pool and Mediterranean views. Then we checked out and spent the next three nights sailing Mallorca's coastline aboard a catamaran instead.

I wasn't prepared for how much I'd love it. You fall asleep surrounded by mountains with nothing but the sound of the Mediterranean outside your window. You wake up, open the hatch above your bed, and realize you're in a completely different cove. You walk upstairs barefoot and breakfast is already waiting. No crowds, no fighting for a pool chair, no Google Maps.

The boat isn't just transportation between destinations; the boat is the destination.

Cabin Size & Storage: Cozy Is the Point

Let's keep it real: you're not getting a sprawling hotel suite. Our cabin had a comfortable bed, storage, and hatches looking out toward the water, everything we actually needed, nothing more.

But here's the thing: we barely spent time in it. Why would you, when the Mediterranean is your backyard? We spent most of our time upstairs eating, drinking, swimming, and watching sunsets. The cabin became exactly what it needed to be, our little retreat at the end of an incredible day.

Yes, There's a Real Bathroom

This was one of my biggest questions before boarding, so I know someone reading this has the same one. Yes, you have a proper bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower. Is it Four Seasons-sized? Absolutely not. It's compact, functional, and takes a little adjustment; showers are quicker and you become more conscious of water usage.

By Day 2, I wasn't even thinking about it. I'd gladly take a smaller bathroom in exchange for waking up on the Mediterranean.

Sleeping Aboard & Waking Up at Anchor

This might be what sold me on the whole experience. Instead of pulling into a hotel every evening, we anchored in secluded coves along Mallorca's coastline, no resort, no crowds, just mountains, turquoise water, and a handful of sailboats. We could finish breakfast and jump straight into the Mediterranean. One night, we ended up swimming at night under the stars. Those are the moments you simply can't recreate at a hotel.

Motion & Seasickness

At anchor in calm coves, I found the movement minimal. You'll notice it more while actually sailing between destinations, so anyone prone to seasickness should come prepared with the right precautions in advance. For the record: I didn't get seasick once, and neither did anyone else on the boat.

Wi-Fi & Connectivity

Don't expect resort-level Wi-Fi out on the water; connectivity can vary depending on your location. But there was something genuinely nice about everyone actually being present instead of glued to their phones.

Getting On & Off Via Dinghy

When you're anchored rather than docked at a marina, a tender (small dinghy) takes you to shore. It honestly became part of the adventure rather than an inconvenience.

Packing in a Soft Bag

Hard-shell suitcases are not your friend on a yacht. Storage is compact, so soft duffels and packing cubes are the move if you want your gear to actually fit.

Barefoot Boat Life

Shoes basically disappear once you board. By Day 2, you won't even think twice about it.

The Food: Why a Private Chef Isn't Optional

There were technically two chefs aboard our trip: one hired to cook, and my husband, silently evaluating everything (because obviously if I'm considering bringing you all on a sailing trip, I need my own chef along to judge the chef).

Eating on a catamaran in the middle of the Mediterranean hits differently. Breakfast happens while you're overlooking turquoise water. Lunch is waiting when you climb back onboard from swimming. Dinner comes with wine, sunset views, and zero logistics: no reservations, no Ubers, no deciding where eight people want to eat, no grocery shopping, no cleaning up. Your restaurant sails with you.

SO… WHAT DID CHEF BILLY THINK?

Now y’all KNOW I wasn’t going to spend four days on a catamaran with a private chef and not ask my husband for his professional opinion

So I made Billy give me his official assessment:

FAVORITE MEAL:

The Spanish food — especially the paella and tapas. No surprise there. If we’re sailing around Spain, he wants us EATING like we’re in Spain.

BIGGEST SURPRISE:

The breakfast spread!

This was actually the thing he wasn’t expecting. Every morning we came upstairs to this beautiful, elaborate breakfast spread and according to Chef Billy: “10/10.” 👏🏾 And I agree! There was something about waking up in a secluded cove, walking upstairs barefoot and seeing THAT breakfast waiting for us with the Mediterranean as our backdrop.

ONE THING HE’D CHANGE:

More Ibérico ham because, in Billy’s words, “You can’t come to Spain and not have that.”

And apparently we also need chocolates after dinner because my husband loves chocolate and feels this is an essential component of luxury yacht travel.

Honestly? Noted.  Because this is exactly what I was doing throughout the trip … figuring out what I loved, what I'd keep and what I'd add if I created a Shakespeare Agency version of this experience.

SO PRIVATE CHEF: KEEP!

Actually… non-negotiable.

I don't want y'all figuring out who's cooking breakfast.

I don't want anyone washing dishes.

I don't want us getting out of the water and asking, “Okay, where are we eating?”

I want us swimming until we're ready to get out, pouring a glass of wine, getting dressed for dinner and sitting down together while somebody ELSE handles all of that.

THAT is vacation.

And now that Billy has weighed in, apparently I also need to add more Ibérico ham + after-dinner chocolates to my Mallorca 2027 notes.

(Warning: don't watch this hungry 😂)

Privacy & The Social Side

Privacy on a yacht is more intimate than you'd expect: your own cabin, quiet coves away from crowds, no beach packed with tourists. But the social dynamic surprised me too. We boarded with people we'd just met, and within hours we were drinking, laughing, dancing, and jumping into the Mediterranean like we'd known each other forever. By the end of the trip, it felt like we'd been traveling together far longer than three days.

That's exactly when my Shakespeare Agency brain started working overtime, imagining a few catamarans, private chefs, our own music, hidden coves, and a full Shakespeare Agency crew sailing through Mallorca together.

What Surprised Me Most

I had just spent the night before in a beautiful 5-star resort suite with a private rooftop pool. And yet, waking up on the Mediterranean felt even more special. Maybe it was opening my eyes somewhere new each morning. Maybe it was jumping into impossibly blue water before breakfast. Maybe it was watching the sunset knowing we had nowhere else to be.

That feeling of having nowhere else you need to be is exactly what real luxury felt like on this trip.

Why I Had to Experience This Myself First

A brochure couldn't tell me this. Instagram couldn't tell me this. A sales deck definitely couldn't. I needed to live it before I ever considered bringing you along.

Yacht life isn't resort life, and it isn't supposed to be. It's slower, more intimate, more spontaneous and somehow more luxurious in an entirely different way.

What would you want to know before booking a trip like this?

MALLORCA 2027: FIRST TO KNOW

Nothing is officially announced yet, but if this Mallorca sailing experience passes the test, you could be among the first people I invite.

My sailing experience with Nautica Collective was hosted. As always, the opinions and recommendations I share are my own.
