Returning to the Motherland has been one of the greatest gifts travel has given me, and there are few places I love more than the beautiful nation of South Africa. With its breathtaking scenery, incredible wildlife, delicious cuisine and wine, and colorful culture and history, this captivating country has something for everyone. These are a few of my favorite things to do in South Africa and why I am planning not one but two group visits there in the next couple of years!
Make moments to remember. The Table Mountain Aerial Cable Car is the perfect way to see the Mother City. A five-minute journey up the side of the mountain. Once you get to the top, you have a bird's eye view across the incredible coastline (as long as the fog stays away!), and you can truly appreciate the magic that Cape Town offers. The Table Mountain National Park houses the Cape of Good Hope, a historically significant point for explorers from Europe, and over 250 species of animals live here, including penguins and antelope. On a good day, you might see whales swimming off the coast, and there are many colorful plants to be seen as well. It is truly breathtaking and a chance to capture your memories in photo form.
See the Big Five in their natural habitat. At Madikwe Game Reserve, you can see elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo, among the 60 other large mammals in the reserve. If you have ever wanted to enjoy this majestic African wildlife in the flesh, this community-based conservation reserve is the best place to do so! The elephants and lions were definitely my favs! 😍 The tour guides are friendly and informative, and you may even get a chance to get up close and personal with some of the more personable residents.
Witness a culture like no other. South Africa has a long and interesting history, with many cultures coming together here to live alongside each other. Taking a walk through Soweto township will open your eyes to the diversity and uniqueness of this beautiful nation. A visit to the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO heritage site that is home to the largest concentration of human ancestral remains anywhere in the world, will wow you, and just 30 miles away, you can take a fashion tour through Johannesburg that demonstrates just how colorful and joyful the South African people are.
Taste the magic. After exploring the sights and sounds of the vibrant city, what better way to end the day than with some delectable wine tasting. South Africa is recognized as one of the best wine producers globally, and the fresh and tasty local cuisine is the perfect match for whichever wine you choose. Retire to your room and relax with a glass or two, or go out on the town and seek out the nightlife - either way, your senses will be awakened, and the magic of South Africa will be something you remember for a long, long time.
