Virgin Voyages: Why This Cruise Changed Everything I Thought About Cruising

Let me be upfront with you: I was not always a cruise person. The word "cruise" used to conjure images of overcrowded buffets, cheesy entertainment, and thousands of strangers fighting for a sun lounger. Then I sailed on Virgin Voyages and then I sailed it again. And again. Three times now, and I'm still finding new reasons to go back.

Here's everything you need to know about why Virgin Voyages is different, what to expect onboard, and why it might just be the most underrated luxury vacation experience on the water.

The Arrival Story (Yes, We Chased the Ship)

Let's start at the beginning, because our most recent Virgin Voyages experience began with a sprint. Billy and I missed our cruise out of Puerto Rico after our flight was delayed, so we spent an unexpected night in San Juan and woke up the next morning with one mission: chase the ship to Sint Maarten.

Was it the birthday plan? Absolutely not. Was it an adventure we'll never forget? One hundred percent. Because when you're determined to celebrate, a little detour isn't a setback, it's just part of the story.

We flew to Sint Maarten, ran to the port, and genuinely prayed they would let us board. When they handed us those wristbands, the relief was indescribable.

We celebrated the way any self-respecting traveler would: sunset champagne at Richard's Rooftop, a birthday dinner at The Wake, and a full night at The Manor, where the music was so good the yaadie in me couldn't resist dutty whining on the dancefloor. 🇯🇲

Moral of the story: always chase the ship. It's worth it.

The Food: Forget Everything You Know About Cruise Dining

Three Virgin Voyages sailings later and the food still hits. If you think cruise food means buffets and basic meals, allow me to introduce you to the restaurant lineup onboard, because this is a full culinary experience at sea.

The Wake is the ship's signature restaurant and it delivers on every level. Brunch here means eggs Benedict and French toast; dinner means oysters, tuna crudo, lamb chops, and steak. It's the kind of meal you'd expect at a top-tier city restaurant, not on a ship.

Extra Virgin is where Italian comfort food meets elevated execution. Fresh pasta, meatballs, and a tableside affogato that deserves its own Instagram moment. I've eaten here on every sailing and it never disappoints.

Gunbae brings Korean BBQ and drinking games to the table, literally. It's interactive, social, and one of the most fun dining experiences I've had anywhere, on land or sea.

Test Kitchen is for the adventurous eater. A multi-course tasting experience that pushes boundaries and rewards an open palate. Go in curious and leave impressed.

Pink Agave serves modern Mexican with serious flavor. And yes, the "It's Crickets In Here" cocktail actually contains dried crickets. I tried it. I'd try it again. 🦗

Beyond the main restaurants, daytime eating is equally well-handled. The Galley covers casual all-day dining; Grounds Club delivers pastries and lattes; Sip Lounge offers caviar and cocktails; Juice Sea resets you with fresh juice after late nights; and Opa Hour at The Dock provides bites and views during the golden hour.

And of course, I ended the night dutty whining at The Manor. Late-night pizza is the only acceptable move. Non-negotiable.

The Fashion: Every Walkway Is a Runway

One thing about Virgin Voyages, the dress code is "whatever makes you feel extraordinary." From boarding looks to island day fits, Scarlet Night glam, and dinner-at-sea elegance, every day and night calls for a different outfit.

I packed intentionally for this sailing: birthday dinner glam, Scarlet Night slay, casual island looks, and everything in between. The ship's aesthetic is sleek and modern, and the guests match the energy. Pack your best looks. The walkways are the runway and the ship is the stage.

Scarlet Night deserves its own mention: a ship-wide themed party where everyone dresses in red and the entire vessel transforms into one massive celebration. It's one of those experiences you have to see to believe.

The Spa: Wait, This Is on a Cruise Ship?

The Redemption Spa might be the most underrated experience on the entire ship—and that's saying something given the competition.

The facilities include a thermal suite, hydrotherapy pools, a salt room, heated marble beds, a sauna, and a steam room. It's a full wellness sanctuary designed to help you decompress while at sea. I spent an afternoon working through every facility before booking the Seaweed Body Treatment: a 125-minute detox ritual that included a full body exfoliation, a nutrient-rich seaweed mask wrap, and a customized massage.

I walked out feeling like a completely new woman. Skin baby-smooth, mind quiet, body reset.

If you're sailing Virgin Voyages and you skip the spa, you're doing it wrong. Book it early; appointments fill up fast.

The Entertainment & Activities: Never a Dull Moment

Here's what separates Virgin Voyages from every other cruise line I've experienced: the entertainment is genuinely good. Not "good for a cruise", just good.

The Manor is the ship's nightclub and it delivers every single night. Live DJs, dancing, and an atmosphere that rivals any club on land. Parties here go late and the energy is consistent.

Richard's Rooftop hosts a champagne happy hour with panoramic ocean views, one of the most civilized ways to watch the sun set.

Beyond the nightlife, there are live music performances, dance classes, fitness programming, and activities that keep the days full without feeling scheduled. Billy and I got deeply competitive during pickleball (I'll let you guess who won), and the balcony hammock became a daily ritual for decompressing between adventures.

You could stay onboard all day and still feel like you're on a proper vacation. That's the mark of a well-designed ship.

Why Virgin Voyages Works (The Practical Breakdown)

Adults-only (18+): The energy is elevated, intentional, and free from the chaos of family cruise dynamics. This is a grown-up vacation.

No buffet culture: Every meal is a restaurant experience. The difference in quality and atmosphere is significant.

Included dining: All restaurants are included in your fare, no nickel-and-diming for every meal.

Caribbean itineraries: Perfect for island hopping with style. Sint Maarten, Puerto Rico, and other ports make for excellent shore days.

Strong design aesthetic: The ship is beautiful. Interiors are modern, moody, and thoughtfully designed, nothing like the typical cruise ship décor.

Who Virgin Voyages Is Perfect For

Couples celebrating anniversaries, honeymoons, or milestone birthdays. Friend groups who want a shared luxury experience without the stress of planning. Solo travelers who want a social, safe, and stylish environment. Anyone who has written off cruising based on outdated assumptions.

If you've ever said, "Cruises aren't for me," Virgin Voyages is the exception worth making.

Final Thoughts: Three Sailings and Counting

After three Virgin Voyages experiences, I can say with confidence that this cruise line has genuinely changed how I think about ocean travel. The food is exceptional, the spa is transformative, the entertainment is real, and the overall experience feels curated rather than mass-produced.

It's luxury travel that happens to be on a ship and that distinction matters.

Whether you're celebrating something special or simply ready for a vacation that delivers on every level, Virgin Voyages belongs on your list.
